  • CRITICALLY IMPORTANT = REMOVE ANY COMPILER OPTIMIZATION ( -O) FROM THE CPPFLAGS IN THE MAKEFILE FOR GDB TO BEHAVE AS EXPECTED
  • Having indented code doesn't show up as well in gdb, best to have statements on one line
  • Compile with option -ggdb (when using gcc or g++) to get maximum benefit, most GDB debugging functionality.

Basics

  • run - run the program
  • run arg1 arg2
  • print variable = look at the contents of variable
  • bt = where are we in the call stack
    • where = same as bt but more info
  • up = go up in the call stack
  • down = go down in the call stack
  • list = list the next lines source code
  • list - = list the previous lines
  • list <FileName>:<LineNumber> = list source code
  • list <classname><tab> = shows a list of all the member functions of the class to browse
  • info source = show name of current source file
  • <Enter> = repeat last command
  • kill = kill the program, but keep gdb open and everything loaded
  • quit = exit gdb
  • show commands
  • show commands +

Breakpoints

  • list func2
  • break 15
  • break file.cpp:15
  • break SomeClass::member_function
  • do your print vals
  • condition 1 val>0 = stop at breakpoint 1 if the condition applies
    • cond <n> i == 9 = break at breakpoint <n> when i equals 9
  • do your print vals
  • set variable varname = value = changing the value while debugging
    • set variable p = malloc(sizeof(int))
    • set variable *p = 255
    • print *p
  • info break = show defined breakpoints

stepping

  • step = s = step into
  • next = n = step over
  • c = continue = run program until next breakpoint
  • finish = continues execution up to the end of the current function

  • gdb /home/colettace/bin/wndchrm

Showing Values in Expressions

  • display [expr] = Automatic Display (what makes gdb useable)
    • delete display #
    • info display
    • display /s a_string_variable
  • x /s [expr] = show me what's in this string ("x" stands for "examine")
  • finish - shows return value when exiting function.
